2021 continues to be a year of grief and sorrow with hope only at the end of the tunnel as Tamil cinema has witnessed several notable names passing away. With the coronavirus pandemic being the predominant cause for a majority of the deaths over the past one and a half years, there have been some others who have succumbed to various other reasons as well. The despair experienced during the year so far has been unparalleled and it has now come as a big shock to many in Tamil cinema as renowned art director Angamuthu Shanmugam has passed away due to cancer. A Tamil cinema veteran, Angamuthu Shanmugam died on Saturday after a battle with cancer, with his last rites ritual set to take place on June 28 at 12PM. His body has been placed at his Kumarappa Street residence in Nungambakkam, Chennai, for all those who wish to pay their final respects. 

Angamuthu Shanmugam is a notable name in Tamil cinema and had established himself as a talent to reckon with having worked in the art direction department with leading directors namely R. K. Selvamani, Manoj Kumar among many others. Over the course of his career in South Indian films, he has worked in more than 100 films in Tamil and Telugu cinema. It is to be noted that apart from being a leading name in art direction, Angamuthu had also been elected thrice for the post of the General Secretary of the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI). The loss of Angamuthu will come as a huge personal loss to Tamil cinema and we here at Galatta extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.
