Film workshop by Ranjith

Malayalam writer, director and actor Ranjith is conducting a film workshop at the Youth Hostel in Kozhikode from Tuesday to choose theatre actors for his next film Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha, starring Mammootty in the lead. The film workshop was inaugurated by actress Manju Warrier. Her husband, actor Dileep, scriptwriters T. Damodaran and Deedi, danseuse Aswathy V. Nair and MLA A. Pradeep Kumar were also present during the inauguration.

Leading Malayalam directors and actors will take classes at the workshop over the next 10 days. “More than 400 theatre actors applied and I shortlisted 31 for the workshop. Actors Mammootty, Siddique, Saikumar, Vijayaraghavan, Revathy and Kalpana as well as directors K.G. George, Jayaraj, Lal Jose and Sibi Malayil will address the group,” director Ranjith said, adding that the aim of the workshop was to fine-tune the actors who are not familiar with the camera.

Produced under the banner of Capital Theatres, Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha is based on a famous novel 'Palery Maanikyam - Oru Paathira Kolapathakathinte Katha' by T.P. Rajeevan, first published in Mathrubhumi as a weekly serial. As the title indicates, the story is based on a murder that took place 51 years back (1958) at Paleri near Kozhikode. Mammootty plays a writer who comes from Delhi in search of his rootsand investigates the murder.

"I was most impressed by this story, among all the books I have read in any language. The story revolves around a village girl, Manikkam, who is brutally raped and murdered on the 11th day of her marriage," Ranjith said. This is the fifth time Mammootty is working with Ranjith. Earlier, they havecome together for Black, Kaiyoppu, Prajapathy and Nasrani.
