Sanjana Sarathy became a popular name among Tamil cinema audiences after playing the role of 'Thalapathy' Vijay's younger sister in the 2012 blockbuster, Thuppakki. The actress has since become a youth sensation, while also appearing in films like Endrendrum Punnagai, Vaalu, Enai Noki Paayum Thota, and more recently in Varisu. Having made her acting debut in Vazhakku Enn 18/9, Sanjana recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Galatta Ritz to talk about shooting for Thuppakki, while also revealing an interesting incident where she and Vijay had to film together for photo stills that would feature in a crucial scene in the film.
Speaking about acting alongside Vijay, Sanjana said, "I didn't know the intensity of that scene to be honest. And firstly, I wouldn't say that I had a lot of scenes with him because my role was very limited. I had very limited screen time with him. And, I was like, 'Damn it, I wish I had more scenes with him'. But, whatever little time I spent with him and that particular scene where she says she wants a dress in a specific color, I didn't know the intensity and what was going to happen after that." She added, "They don't reveal the entire story to us. But, more than that scene, we were taking pictures, and there will be like a particular shot where there will be photo frames on the wall. So, he'll go and see each picture since they are all family portraits and they will be hung on the wall. He'll have a nostalgic throwback and he'll be really emotional (looking) at those pictures. So, I had the most fun while shooting for those pictures. We were taking photo stills."
Currently starring in the Netflix Hindi coming-of-age romantic web series Mismatched, Sanjana continued, "When the photo shoot happened, that's when I had the most fun because he took me and the other actor who played my older sister. So, we had like a shot on a bike and that was a lot of fun. I think he's a bike enthusiast and he enjoys riding bikes. And, my mum was on the sets the entire time. I was very young and she used to accompany me. And, at that time, just to get her scared, he would drift the bike and do all that. My mum would get freaked out by bikes in general. He'll ask me quietly if we can do a scare on her. He's not a loud person and will say in a way that only we can hear him. And, he'll ask how we can ride the bike and I'll tell him to go ahead. For me, all of this was very thrilling because Vijay sir is asking me and I'll tell, 'Whatever you say, I'm going to say yes only'. That was like a good throwback memory I had with him. He has an amazing sense of humor. His comedy timing is too good."
