One of the issues that is currently raging across the world is the "Black Lives Matter" movement, which originated in the USA. This movement began when on Memorial Day this year in May, a Police officer in Minneapolis handcuffed George Floyd and pressed down his knee on Floyd's neck till he died. This custodial death was captured on video by a bystander and went viral on social media. The death of 46-year-old Floyd sparked off the "Black Lives Matter" movement, which was to take a stand against racism in all forms. The movement picked up steam and many people who were being subject to racial discrimination began speaking out against their oppressors. This movement opened up many a can of worms across different fields, including society, sports, cinema and lots more!

Unfortunately, despite the "Black Lives Matter" movement gaining such popularity and many people pledging their support to it, an incident similar to George Floyd's has now come out! Reports state that the Philadelphia Police shot and killed a black male, after yelling at him to drop his knife. The death of this 27-year-old man, sparked off violent protests which lead to 30 Police officers being injured and dozens of people being arrested! Media reports quote a Police spokesperson as telling that the shooting happened when officers responded to a report of a person wielding a weapon in public. Police were summoned to the Cobbs Creek neighbourhood, where the man (whose name was later found to be Walter Wallace) was identified, brandishing a knife. The reports state that despite the officers repeatedly ordering Wallace to drop the knife, he refused to do so and advanced upon them.

The two officers on the spot warned him against advancing and when he failed to do so, fired their guns a number of times. Reports state that Wallace was hit on his chest and shoulders, following which one of the officers lifted him into their Police vehicle and took him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival! People began to take to the streets and protested against the Police, which lead to severe and violent clashes with several dumpsters and Police cars being set on fire. Unable to contain the crowds, the Police officers formed a line and began attacking the protestors with batons but over 30 officers were said to have been injured after being struck by bricks, rocks and other projectiles. Videos of the incident recorded by bystanders show the officers yelling and Wallace and him advancing on them. However, whether he had a knife in hand, is not easily discernible though witnesses state that he was indeed holding one. The names and ethnicity of the officers who fired upon Wallace have not been disclosed yet but both of them have been taken off active street duty. The body cams of these officers are also being examined. The City Police Commissioner arrived at the scene of the incident shortly and mentioned that he could sense the anger of the local community and assured that all and any questions would definitely be answered by the investigation. Walter's father is said to have revealed that his son had been suffering from mental illness and was on medication but questioned why the Police had not used Tasers to subdue him, instead of shooting him down. This latest incident has caused people to protest in huge numbers, bringing to the fore the "Black Lives Matter" concern. Stay tuned for updates...
