Ever since the state & central governments announced lockdowns to curb the spread of the COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus, in March 2021, all schools and colleges were also shut down. The lockdown has now been lifted and normalcy is returning almost everywhere but the governments have been reluctant to allow the schools and colleges to reopen. Many states have allowed their schools to reopen, after colleges began reopening in phases. However, despite schools being reopened in adjacent states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, they continued to remain closed in Tamil Nadu!
Earlier, the TN government had directed all the schools to consult with the parents of their students, over whether to reopen or not. After a state-wide consultation with the parents, the schools were not reopened and continued to remain closed. However, it looks like the government has finally allow the reopening now. Earlier today, the TN Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that schools for classes 10 & 12, will be allowed to reopen in the state, on January 19th! However, the CM has also issued a number of guidelines to be followed, for the schools to be reopened!
The CM has stated that schools can be reopened only for classes 10 & 12 and also that only 25 students can be allowed, in each classroom. Also, in order to boost the immunity levels of the students attending the classes, they will be given Zinc and Vitamin tablets. Reports state that State government arrived at the decision of opening the schools, after over 95% of the parents had expressed their favour for this decision. The schools had most recently, gotten the parents' opinion on the 8th & 9th of this month and a report was submitted to the government, following which the decision to reopen schools was taken.
