The first game of today's double header was won by Mumbai Indians who brushed past Sunrisers Hyderabad by 34 runs. The second game was played between the two teams on the bottom of this year's IPL table - Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP)! KXIP's captain KL Rahul won the toss and chose to bat first! KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal - the two players who are in first and second position for the Orange Cap and the highest run scorers so far in the tournament, began fluently! Though no wickets fell in the Powerplay, the CSK bowlers kept the KXIP openers in check and they were able to only score 46 without losing a wicket! Piyush Chawla was introduced in the 9th over by MS Dhoni and he struck with his first ball as he removed Mayank Agarwal for 26, with Sam Curran taking the catch! Mandeep Singh who was picked for KXIP today came in next and smashed 27 off 16 balls before falling to Jadeja with Rayudu taking a good catch!
Nicholas Pooran came in next and after getting his eye in for a few balls, he smashed Jadeja for 13 runs with a couple of boundaries. KL Rahul had reached 46 off 44 balls before he took Shardul Thakur to the cleaners in the 15th over, which went for 16 runs. Pooran got a couple more massive 6s before Shardul Thakur bowled a dream 18th over! He got Pooran to hit a high skier which was taken by Jadeja and followed it up with a deceptive slower delivery to get KL Rahul caught behind by MS Dhoni! The over went for just 3 runs and brought back CSK into the game! Bravo and Thakur kept things tight, giving Maxwell and Sarfraz not much to hit and KXIP ended their innings on 178/4! Wanting 179 for victory, the in-form Faf du Plessis and woefully out-of-form Shane Watson walked out into the middle for CSK!
CSK were off to a shaky start but had luck going their way as a number of mishits lobbed up but into empty spaces on the field. Birthday boy Chris Jordan was brought on to bowl the 6th over of the innings and was given a warm welcome to the crease by du Plessis, who smacked him for 19 runs, taking CSK to 60 for no loss, at the end of the Powerplay! This set the ball rolling and gave the CSK fans a lot of confidence. Watson too got into the act with a couple of 4s against spinner Harpreet Brar. With Faf going great guns, Watson took his time to settle and eventually got himself going and the duo raised the 100 run partnership before the end of the 10th over itself! When Jordan returned in the 11th over, Watson let go with a couple of boundaries to raise his first 50 of this IPL and Faf brought up his own half-century in the same over! After a couple of quiet overs, Watson & Faf took the 14th over for 12 runs! CSK needed just 44 runs from the remaining 6 overs and they finished it off in style with the openers remaining unbeaten and with 14 balls to spare! Shane Watson won the Player of the Match award! This win takes CSK to the 6th place on the table, above SRH and KXIP! The catch MS Dhoni took to dismiss KL Rahul, was his 100th in the IPL!
