Carla Bruni reveals all

Sorry to disappoint some prurient voyeurs, but we are talking about her revelations about how she got married. Now read on...

It’s not often that the President of a country decides to follow his heart, get a divorce and marry a lady from showbiz – at least not when he's in office! But French President Nicolas Sarkozy, risking his public image, went ahead and married model-cum-singer Carla Bruni two months after they met. And Carla comes clean about how their whirlwind romance got started and how it continues, in an 80-minute film called Somebody Told Me About… Carla Bruni, that willbe screenedin France on New Year’s Day.

At a dinner party, Carla and Nicolas were seated next to each other and so they met. "The sparks were instantaneous, immediate... I don't know what he has, but he has something very protective that I never found before, maybe because I was much more attracted to artists," she coos. "I realized people were shocked when I first started dating him, because presidents don't date and I understand that. But it's just another world for me because I come from the modelling and the music world – we can date forever, we don't have to get married! Also it was the first time a president got divorced, usually they don't get divorced because that's not good for their position. So I guess Nicolas is having a life like a normal 50-year-old man. He can get divorced and he can get married again."

But no matter how much she loves her husband, Carla was pretty sure she never wanted to marry at the cost of her singing career, and made this clear to her man before they tied the knot. "I said to Nicolas, 'I cannot choose between you and my music, it's ridiculous. I'm not going to drop my job and iron my husband's shirts for the next four years.' So of course he didn't ask me to choose, I decided to keep my job," she says. Adding, "Maybe when my husband is no longer president of France, I can play live again and be an old lady singing the blues. That would be nice."
