Onam with Kavya and Ajmal

Onam is the ultimate celebration for all Malayalees all over the world. It is celebrated in honour of Mahabali, the mythical demon king of ancient Kerala, who visits his subjects every year on Onam. Mahabali's reign is considered as the golden era of Kerala.

According to legends, during his time, all were equal, joyful and merry. People were all free from harm, anxiety and sickness. Death of the children was never even heard of during his time, when there were no lies, theft or deceits and no one was false in speech either. No one cheated or wronged his neighbour. All lived as one casteless race. All in all, Kerala was an ideal state.

Theoretically, the concept of an ideal state can be traced back to the ancient Greek philosophy and in almost all civilizations in the human history; we can find reference to the concept of an 'ideal state' or Republic. Plato's ideal state was an aristocracy, which can be established only by a Philosopher-King ("the rule by the best"). For Jesus Christ, it is through peace, for Gandhi through Satyagraha and for Karl Marx through Class struggle. Although the idea of an ideal state or republic is utopian, excellent in idea but impracticable (Utopia in Greek means "no-place"), it has a special significance to the people of modern times when all their dreams are for the realization of such a state.
