Tamil Nadu government issued a news bulletin on Saturday in regard to the state's combat against the COVID-19 outbreak, with data released showing 5,980 fresh positive cases being recorded, taking the total number of cases to 3,73,410. The total number of active coronavirus cases across the state including those in isolation as on today is 53,710.

Chennai recorded 1,294 new coronavirus positive cases on August 22 with the district's total currently standing at 1,24,071 cases. The city has consistently over the past month or so either shown a drop in the number of cases or a sudden small spike. Despite being the worst-affected in the state, TN's capital has begun to open up a lot more with a majority of the people following the necessary precautions in the wake of the spread of the virus. At present, Chennai city alone has 12,962 active cases with people currently undergoing treatment under home quarantine, while Thiruvallur and Coimbatore are following suit with 3,903 and 3,151 active cases.

80 people died on Saturday across Tamil Nadu due to COVID-19 taking the state's death toll up to 6,420 casualties. The state had been witnessing death toll numbers crossing the 100 mark over the past few days with today's figures showing a significant decline despite the number of new positive cases continuing to be on the rise on an everyday basis. Meanwhile, the recovery count has been progressing steadily forward as the past 24 hours have once again seen a substantial development with 5,603 patients having been discharged taking the total to 3,013,280. 

The total number of samples tested across in Tamil Nadu today are 73,547, while the overall count currently stands at 41,36,490. Likewise, the number of persons tested today are 71,679 with the total in the state going up to 39,95,513.
