Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday released a new media bulletin regarding the state's combat against the COVID-19 outbreak. The latest data shows 5,795 fresh positive cases being recorded on August 19 taking the total number of cases in the state to 3,55,449. The total number of active coronavirus cases across the state including those in isolation as on today is 53,155.

There were 1,186 new coronavirus positive cases reported in Chennai taking the district's total to 1,20,267 cases. Chennai, which had for a short while began registering less than 1,000 positive cases, has over the past few days been crossing that mark and continues to be the worst-affected district in Tamil Nadu due to the virus. At present, Chennai city alone has 12,256 active cases with people currently undergoing treatment under home quarantine, while Thiruvallur and Cuddalore are following suit with 3,935 and 2,930 active cases.

116 people died on Wednesday across Tamil Nadu due to COVID-19 taking the state's death toll up to 6,123 casualties. The coronavirus death toll in the state has been registering past the 100 mark, with the people being requested by the government and health officials to adhere to following the protocol to safeguard themselves from the infection. Meanwhile, the recoveries count keeps progressing forward at a steady pace as the past 24 hours have seen 6,384 patients getting discharged taking the total number of recoveries to 2,96,171. 

The total number of samples tested across in Tamil Nadu today are 67,720, while the overall count currently stands at 39,13,523. Likewise, the number of persons tested today are 65,592 with the total in the state going up to 37,78,249. Today's statistics reveal that the recovery toll in the state has exceeded the number of fresh COVID-19 cases for a single day in the state.
