Slumdog Millionaire releases in Tamil

Naanum Kodeeshwaran, the Tamil version of multiple Oscar award-winner Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle, will hit the screens on Friday with 100 prints across Tamil Nadu, its distributors Falcon Films said in a press statement on Thursday.

Actors Silambarasan, Radha Ravi and ace singer-actor S.P. Balasubramanian have lent their voices to the characters played by Dev Patel, Irrfan Khan and Anil Kapoor respectively. Falcon Films have not disclosed the sum at which the rights were bought, but�industry sources said at least Rs. 5 million was paid as advance royalty.

"I can proudly say that I contributed in a small way to the career of Rahman in the beginning of his odyssey when he played the keyboard for my films. I knew even then that he was a genius. Now, my son (Silambarasan) has dubbed for the film and it is a trip down memory lane for us," actor-turned-director-turned-politician T. Rajendhar was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, over 1,500 members of the Cine Musicians' Union (CMU) that represents the entire South Indian cinema (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada), is all set to felicitate A.R. Rahman upon his return to Chennai on March 1.

A three kg silver memento in the shape of a globe with the etched logo of the body will presented to Rahman by legendary Carnatic musician M. Balamuralikrishna in the presence of music directors M.S. Vishwanathan, Ilayaraja and singer S.P. Balasubramanian. The memento is being made at a cost Rs. 300,000. According to film industry sources, a special 'chariot' is being readied to ferry Rahman from the airport upon his arrival.
