Sean Penn wants Milk Day

Sean Penn won the Best Actor Oscar for his stunning portrayal of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly-gay politicians in America whowas instrumental in bringingabout a number of radical changes in the law in favour of fellow homosexuals. Ever since the movie’s release and his Oscar win, Sean has taken the gay cause quite seriously. He has quite openly voiced his support of the gay community and has also showed his angeragainst anti-gay people. Sean is now urging California lawmakers to officially recognise Harvey Milk's birthday, May 22nd, as a day of significance, to highlight his struggle to the youngsters of today.

This proposal had already been put forth last year, but was turned down by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who insistedHarvey Milk should be honoured in San Francisco, where he was elected to the board of supervisors. However, State Senator Mark Leno agrees with Sean that Harvey is the right public figure to represent the cause of equal rights. He said, "Given California's fiscal crisis, the bill was written to have no cost to the state, and state workers and school employees would not get the day off from work."
