Tamil film industry has decided to observe a token fast on January 7, 2013 to protest against the central government's service tax. Earlier the Film Federation of India (FFI) went on a nationwide strike in  February 2012, to protest against the Central Government's proposal to levy service tax of nearly 12.3 percent on the film industry.

The proposed tax would escalate the filmmaker's costs considerably and so they have decided to go on a strike. Sarath Kumar, the president of the South Indian Film Artistes' Association announced the decision through a press note. The Tamil Film Producers' Council (TFPC), the Federation of Film Employees' Federation of South India (FEFSI) and the South Indian Film Chamber Of Commerce and the associations for television artists, are also likely to take part in this strike.
