Saa Boo Thrii, engineers turn filmi!

No, that’s not the plot ofSaa Boo Thrii (SPT), it’s the story behind the movie which marks the directorial and acting debut of Arshad. SPT was an idea that sparked over coffee at a college cafeteria – and mind you, it was not a film school canteen, but one at an engineering college!

“I started making my own scripts while doing my engineering. Manywho heard my stories were impressed. Rajesh Khanna, producer of this film, and Akshay, one of the heroes in this film, were also my classmates and friends in college, and were among those who loved my scripts. I remember the three of us discussing and dreaming cinema in out college canteen. We were studying engineering but our heart was in cinema! Oncompleting my B.Tech., I came to crossroads in my life – I could do as most of my classmates did and fly off to the US to study further or stay behind and work towards my dream. I stayed behind,” recollects Arshad.

Arshad learned the nuances of film making while doing a small role in Manadhodu Mazhaikalam. Whether he had a shot that day or not, he would be present on the set to observe the way the movie was shaping up. His confidence grew and eventually, he had his own script and was out looking for a producer.

“I narrated the story to many people, but nobody was willing to trusta total novice. It was then that I once again met Rajesh, who by then was doing well in the real estate business. He asked me how far I had gotten with my movie and when he heard that I was on the lookout for a producer, he offered to do it,” reveals Arshad. He believes that his movie will strike a chord with today’s youth – the plot itself is about youngsters, the mistakes they make and how they just move on, without brooding over it too much. “Life must go on. Today’s youngsters are practical enough to see that. This attitude of theirs has never been put on script. I have done it,” he beams.
