RGV gets threatening calls

Well-known film director Ram Gopal Varma, received telephone calls on Sunday threatening him with dire consequences if he goes ahead with his political drama Rakta Charitra, being made in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

According to sources, the calls allegedly came from an unidentified group seemingly related to Maddelacheruvu Suryanarayana Reddy's (better known as Suri) brother Obul Reddy, who is alleged to have plotted the murder of Anantapur TDP MLA Paritala Ravi. (Rakta Charitra is based on the life of Paritala Ravi.)

RGV received threatening calls for depicting Obul Reddy's character 'maliciously' in the film. The callers also sent letters to Ram Gopal Varma's Mumbai office, stating that they would obstruct the film's shooting. The director, meanwhile, said that he would lodge a complaint soon with the Mumbai police in this regard.

"There is no way one gets to know what I am going to portray in the movie. They are threatening to kill me without even watching the movie. For those who are threatening to kill me, I want to give a counter warning. Forget supporters of Obul Reddy’s family, even if Mr. Reddy comes back as a ghost to haunt me, I will not be scared," RGV said.

On the other hand, the family members of Obul Reddy complained that Ram Gopal Varma didn’t bother to contact them or take their version before making Rakta Charitra. "We got to know through the media that the movie has scenes that are not acceptable to my clients. We contacted him several times but there was no response and hence we sent the legal notice," said N.R.K. Mohan, advocate of Obul Reddy’s family.
