Producers shift base to Chennai

In a move against the path of violence undertaken by Vinayan-led Malayalam Cine Technicians' Association (MACTA) and Siddique-led Film Employees' Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), a group of leading Malayalam producers are seriously planning to shift their operations to Chennai.

Mollywood’s current labour unrest, raging differences of opinion among proliferating fraternal organizations and their attempts to disrupt film shootings are the major reasons which promptproducers to think of shifting base to Tamil Nadu.

Nearly 300 members of MACTA, now affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), disrupted the shooting of Mammootty's Daddy Cool at Muhamma and Dileep's Bodyguard at Palakkad last month to vent their ire against the attitudes of these lead actors. They allege that under the guidance of Mammootty and Dileep, attempts are being made to refuse jobs for MACTA's members.

In addition to all these troubles, MACTA has recently threatened to start an indefinite strike from May 16. The frequent shooting disruptions, squabbles between different sections and the ban unilaterally imposed on artistes will cause heavy losses toproducers. The shrinking market and the economic slowdown had already taken its toll on the industry. So, the producers thinkthis is the best solution
