Priyanka wins Kerala state award

Actress Priyanka, who was launched in films with the much-acclaimed Bharath starrer Veyyil, the first-ever Tamil film screened at Cannes as part of Cannes Film Festival 2007, has been adjudged the best actress�T Kerala State Film awards 2008 for her performance in T.V. Chandran's offbeat film Vilapangalkappuram (2008).

State Minister for Education and Culture M.A. Baby announced the award at a press meet at Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday along with Jury Chairman Girish Kasaravalli.

Based on the aftermath of the Gujarat riots of 2002, Vilaapangalkkapuram revolves around a badly-injured Muslim woman named Sahira (Priyanka) who flees Gujarat soon after the riots and arrives in Kozhikode, the native place of her father. Two doctors Mary Varghese (Suhasini) and Gopinath (Biju Menon) try to bring her back to normalcy. Soon, she realizes that the demons are not only in Gujarat, but also in Kerala.
