Priyamani in New Delhi

Pratibha Patil, honourable President of India, will give away the 54th National Film Awards 2006 tomorrow in a function to be held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

South Indian actress Priyamani will receive the Best Actress award for her performance in Ameer Sultan's Paruthiveeran, while Bengali film star Soumitra Chatterjee will be given the Best Actor for his role in debutant director Suman Ghosh's Podokkhep. The best director award goes to Madhur Bhandarkar for Traffic Signal. Malayalam film Pulijanmam, directed by Priyanandan, will receive the best feature film award.

Priyamani, along with National Award, recently won the Filmfare South Award and the Osian Cinefan Award for her work in the Tamil film Paruthiveeran, making it a triple celebration. As a result of her success, she was asked to open the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa along with the 'Bollywood Baadshah' Shahrukh Khan.

Priyamani is very excited today, because she is all set to act alongside her favourite actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya in the new Mani Ratman film, tentatively titled Ravana, which will start rolling in Karaikudi from September 10. The movie, a modern day adaptation of the epic, is a trilingual to be simultaneously made in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Incidentally, Vikram, who will play Ravana in the Hindi version, will be playing Ram in the Tamil and Telugu versions. Aishwarya will be the heroine in all three languages.
