The countdown is on for the release of the highly-anticipated Ponniyin Selvan: 2, which is scheduled to open in cinemas worldwide on April 28, and the spectacular response for the film's trailer and audio launched recently are testimony. With the buzz surrounding the second installment at an all-time high, it has now been revealed that there are plans for the re-release of Ponniyin Selvan: 1, which first came out last year grossing over 500 crores at the global box office. The news of the re-release has been revealed by none other than director Mani Ratnam, who shared the plan with actor-filmmaker Parthiban.

Explaining his wish for the audiences to watch both the Ponniyin Selvan films in theatres during the same time period, Parthiban informed on social media that he had expressed his opinion to Mani Ratnam, who has revealed saying there are plans to re-release the first film on April 21. Posting a photo of himself with Mani Ratnam taken sometime back, Parthiban also shared the WhatsApp conversation between him and the ace filmmaker informing about the Ponniyin Selvan: 1 re-release plans. Parthiban,who portrayed the role of Chinna Pazhuvettarayar in the Ponniyin Selvan films, posted the conversation with Mani Ratnam in which he said, "Planning to release PS 1 in a few theatres on 21st April ." Parthiban's suggestion will be widely acknowledged by fans, who will be looking to revisit the events of the first film ahead of the release of Ponniyin Selvan: 2 towards the end of this month. Produced by Lyca Productions in association with Madras Talkies and featuring music by Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman, the upcoming epic historical action adventure film will see a majority of the star cast reprising their roles among whom include 'Chiyaan' Vikram as Aditha Karikalan, followed by Karthi as Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan, Jayam Ravi as Arunmozhi Varman, Trisha as Kundavai, while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is appearing in dual roles as Nandini and Mandakini. The extended ensemble PS: 2 cast also includes Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prakash Raj, R. Sarathkumar, Jayaram, Prabhu, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vikram Prabhu, Lal, Rahman, Kishore, Ashwin Kakumanu, Nizhalgal Ravi, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, Jayachitra, Vidya Subramanian, Mohan Raman, and Riyaz Khan in key roles.
