Ponniyin Selvan: I is an epic historical action drama film directed by Mani Ratnam who produced it with Subaskaran Allirajah under the banner of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The film serves as the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name. The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast comprising of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rashin Rahman, and R. Parthiban.
The soundtrack consists of six original songs composed by A.R.Rahman, namely, "Ponni Nadhi", "Chola Chola", "Ratchasa Maamaney", "Sol", "Alaikadal" and "Devaralan Aattam". With the video song of 5 songs being released, we finally get the video song of the final song - Ponni Nadhi. The film does not fully feature the song, but this video song show scenes that did not make it into the movie.
There are shots of Vallavaraiyan Vanthiyathevan, played by Karthi, traveling the land via horse, and the vast landscape is beautifully captured. This will be a huge treat for fans of both the songs and the film as it provides a lovely picturesque view delivered by the wonderful cinematography which was handled by the trusted hands of Ravi Varman.
Ponniyin Selvan: I was released in theatres worldwide on 30 September 2022 in standard and IMAX formats. It received critical acclaim from film critics, who praised the direction, cast performances, musical score, visuals, and faithfulness to the novel. Breaking several box-office records, the film went on to gross over Rs. 500 crores and became the highest grossing Tamil film of 2022, the fourth highest grossing Tamil film of all time, and the 15th highest grossing Indian film of all time
