NCP to launch TV channel

There has been a steady increase in the number of private Malayalam TV channels in Kerala, since Asianet, the first private Malayalam channel, was launched in 1994. Currently, there are nine Malayalam channels in the state. To add one more to the list, K. Muraleedharan, the state unit president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and son of former Kerala chief minister K. Karunakaran, announced the launch of a new television channel named Janapriya Communications.

The shares of 'Janapriya' will open for public issue in Thiruvananthapuram and at least 49 percent of the equity will be offered to the public, Muraleedharan told reporters at the inauguration of the proposed channel’s office in the capital. The company will raise funds from Keralites in different parts of the world.

During the inauguration function, Muraleedharan also distributed share certificates of the channel to shareholders. The first share of Janapriya Communications Limited was given to Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma of the Travancore royal family by NCP leader K. Muraleedharan.

A senior film personality is likely to join the channel soon as the chief of operations. Muraleedharan is the chairman and managing director of the company. K.R. Kurup is the executive director. A.C. Shanmughadas, K.P. Kunjikannan, M.P. Gangadharan, A.K. Saseendran and K. Sadirikoya are the other directors.

At least five more channels, including three from prominent media groups in the state, are on the anvil. While Kerala Kaumudi’s channel is expected to go on air by this year end, Mathrubhumi and Mangalam Daily are slated to launch their channels next year. Apart from these channels, Guru Vision and NTV, a successful TV production house, are also scouting for investors from the Middle East.
