Mass commercials still rule: Sundar C.

A new wave of Tamil cinema seems to be fusing the entertainment ofmainstream films with the sensitivity ofart films. However, director-actor Sundar C. has a different opinion. “The larger-than-life mass commercial hero is still alive and kicking! There is a misconception that mass films are on the decline. This has come about because 99.9% of the industry lives in Chennai and its suburbs, where a few so-called films steeped in realism have run. However, in the villages and smaller towns of Tamil Nadu, which form the bulk of the audiences, mass commercials still rule,” he said to a leading English daily.

Sundar C. has directed 28 masala flicks in 15 years and has acted in seven films so far. Sundar C. is getting ready for his back-to-back releases with Vaada and Guru Sishyan, slated to hitscreens soon.

Vaada is a travel movie that starts in Rishikesh and moves to Goa, Alleppey, Tuticorin and other places. The film is expected to be a complete action entertainer with all essential masalaingredients.

His next release Guru Sishyan is something special; veteran actor Sathyaraj plays his guru in the film. Guru Sishyan, directed by Sakthi Chidambaram, is an out-and-out rip-roaring family entertainer laced with sentiments and comedy. His upcoming projects include Murattu Kalai, a remake of the popular Rajinikanth film with the same title and Nagaram, which marks his comeback as director.
