K.S. Namboodiri passes away

K.S. Namboodiri, well-known yesteryear playwright, passed away on Wednesday morning at a private hospital in Kochi. He was 71 and is survived by his wife and two sons. The last rites will be held at his ancestral home at Kuruvilangad, Kottayam district.

Namboodiri had been admitted to the Medical Trust hospital here last month and was undergoing treatment for lung disease. His condition gradually deteriorated.

Active during the seventies and eighties, Namboodiri had written many well-received plays like 'Samsya', 'Pathanam' and 'Samavarthnam'. 'Samasya' was later made into a feature film with the same name.

Namboodiri also wrote the script for Yagam (1980), directed by Sivan, who also made Swapnam (1972) and Abhayam (1991) which won several state awards. Yagam was based on a short story by N. Mohanan, portraying the life of a middle-class young Brahmin, Unni, who joins a political group committed to violent activities. The movie had Babu Nanthancode, Premji, Jalaja, Kalpana and Sreelatha in the main roles.

Namboodiri wrote the lyrics for many movies; the songs in Muthu were all big hits. Two of his plays have been incorporated as textbooks for college level students. Many awards also came his way, including the Vikraman Nair Trophy for the best play, Kerala Sahitiya Akademi award, Abu Dhabi's Shakti award and the Kerala Government award.
