J.D. Chakravathy speaks out

J.D. Chakravathy is one actor who has always restricted himself to sensible movies like Sathya and Shiva. So everyone was surprised to see him playing the role of a commercial goon in Jiiva's latest flick Kacheri Aarambam.

In an interview to a leading English daily, the actor says, “I never wanted to be a part of Kacheri Aarambam. Though I was not interested in it, director Thiraivannan insisted that I listen to the script. His narration was simply outstanding. And, you won’t believe it, but he didn’t even give me the breathing space to say yes or no! This guy is madly in love with cinema.”

“I won’t say that I do something out of the box in the film. I play a goon who looks educated,” he adds

When asked about the sudden change to do a commercial flick, the actor replies, “I don’t believe in this difference between commercial and offbeat cinema. To me, a film that sells is commercial cinema. I remember an incident when I met Superstar Rajinikanth. He told me that one should never look down at commercial potboilers. After all, they are the films that have made some actors climb to the top,” he reminisces.

Speaking about the failure of his last Tamil flick Sarvvam, he says, “I’ve had flops in my career but I’ve never felt so bad. I believe that the film should have worked for director Vishnuvardhan, perhaps because I love him too much! That’s probably one of the reasons why I’ve taken Sarvvam’s failure personally.”

J.D. Chakravarthy has acted over 50 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi. He has also directed 2 films in Hindi and 2 in Telugu.
