I am happy with my roles: Karthika

Karthika of Nam Nadu fame is very famous for her down-to-earth and non-glamorous roles, popularly known as “family” or “homely” roles. The actress recently commented that she is quite happy to land such roles as they explore her acting skills and not just her beauty.

The beautiful actress, who has also done some glamorous roles but later decided against doing them, plays a housewife trying to instill confidence in her plain-looking husband in Dindigul Sarathy, a remake of Malayalam super-hit Vadukku Nokki Yenthram. Apart from this, she also acts in Aaru Maname, an eagerly-awaited family melodrama.

Commenting on her selection of roles, the actress said “I have done a few glamorous roles, but I find none of them having made use of my acting skills. But on the other hand, I see that a role in family drama gives ample scope to showcase my acting skills and many times my role is the pivotal. That is the reason I prefer them”.

Well, absolutely true. If you carefully look at these family dramas, often the female lead is the one who solves a problem or crisis that threatens the family – it is the heroines who carry the film on their beautiful shoulders. And gone are the days, when a family drama only meant a├п┬┐┬╜newly-arrived daughter-in-law of a family patching up the differences of its members! With changing tastes of the audience and budding experimenters in the industry, films like Dindigul Sarathy have come to the fore adding a new dimension to Tamil Cinema.

Dindigul Sarathy is not a formula movie, but is a lighthearted film that shows to you what happens when a plain-looking man with massive inferiority complex but a child’s heart marries a beautiful woman (with some hilarious effect though). Both Karunas, who is the male lead, and Karthika have equal footage and scope in this movie, which will surely tug at your heartstrings.

But it is not at all surprising to see a beautiful lady with impeccable complexion (like Karthika) in an industry where the buzz word is “glamour” preferring “homely roles”! She is not the only one; quite a lot of actresses feel the same after having played the same old “glamour doll” roles.
