Hot off of releasing the bombastic finale to the penultimate season of their hit show Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer unveiled their new production banner named after the terrifying mirror dimension of the series. They created Upside Down Pictures to handle their never-ending growing list of new television and film projects planned for Netflix. The formation of the company is part of the duo's overall deal with the streamer titian. Hilary Leavitt, who has previously produced Ozark and Orphan Black, has been made in charge to run the newfound company.
The Duffers seem to have a lot of confidence in Hilary to lead their production house forward. In a recent statement, they described bonding with her over their love for films and appreciating her as both a storyteller and producer. They said, "It didn’t take long into our first meeting with Hilary, where we bonded over films like Jaws, Home Alone, and Speed, to know we had found a kindred spirit. Hilary’s passion for storytelling is perhaps matched only by her passion for the storytellers themselves, for whom she is fiercely protective. No wonder so many writers and directors are drawn to working with her. She is a rare talent indeed, and we feel extremely grateful to have her at our side as we build Upside Down Pictures."
Even though it has been reported that the Duffers are taking some time off before they dive into writing the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers already have a ton of other major projects in work at Netflix that will fall under Upside Down Pictures. These include a Stranger Things spin-off (the Duffer Brothers claim only Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, has figured out the concept behind it), a live-action television adaptation of Death Note, an original series from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance alums Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, and a previously announced adaptation of Stephen King’s The Talisman, which was created by Stranger Things writer Curtis Gwinn and is being co-produced by Steven Spielberg.
