Chennai Marathon press meet

MARG and Tamil Maiyyam, organisers of the Chennai marathon, briefed press reporters about the development of the event in a meet convened today. The organizers are happy with the number of registrations – 2500 for the half-marathon and 24,000 for the Great Chennai City run – they have received so far. The final phase of the registration will close on the evening of August 29th.

The press meet served as a curtain-raiser for this event. The organizers have done a commendable job, making excellent arrangements to provide comfort to the participants. Right from excellent parking facilities to the awards ceremony in which the prestigious OTA Officers' Band will perform, the arrangements are perfect. A London-based company specializing in still photography has been invited to capture the event on film. Adequate water bottles and sponges will be available every kilometre of the route, and an ambulance with paramedical professionals will be available at every 3 kilometres.

The Chennai Marathon is the third richest half-marathon of the world; the first prize for half-marathon is Rs. 10 lacs; there is no gender-based discrimination in the prize amount; besides, special prizes worth Rs. 60 lacs are waiting to be won.

The event will be presided over by the Union Minister for sports, Mr. M.S. Gill; the chief guests will be State Electricity Minister Arcot Veerasamy and Sports Minister Mr. Moideen Khan.

The proceeds from this marathon will go to GiveLife Charity, and will be used in taking care of the essential needs of 13,600 underprivileged children.

Event Date and Time: Sunday, August 31st; half-marathon starts at 6:30 a.m. and the Great Chennai City Run at 7:30 a.m from Island Grounds.
