Boom time in Kollywood

The month of Aadi is supposed to be inauspicious. But then, a mind-boggling 21 films were released in July. It's boom time in Kollywood if the numbers are any indication. On the flip side, only five of the 21 managed to run beyond one week, a telling comment on the (un)popularity and profitable running of the rest.

The emerging scenario appears more healthy, thanks to the talent bank. Even directors are ready to turn heroes, convinced that the storyline is the ultimate winner. Producers are willing invest their money if the script is good and handled by a director who inspires confidence. Even Vikram has entrusted the directorial responsibility to Sasikumar for his maiden production venture.

Consider Hari Kumar, who started off as a choreographer but changed track to become a hero. Two films later, he is banking on his soon-to-release Madurai. Hari avers there is a place for everyone in the industry, so long as quality is provided.
