A legend in Indian cinema, filmmaker P. Bharathiraja, lovingly called by his fans as ‘Iyakkunar Imayam’ has left an indelible mark with his films since his arrival on the scene with the critical and commercial blockbuster, 16 Vayathinile, in 1977. A Padmashri awardee, the veteran director has now been unanimously elected as the President of the Tamil Nadu Film Director's Association and is expected to be felicitated later today (June 10) at Chennai.

The six-time National Award-winning director has gone on to make cult classic films that include Kizhake Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Nizhalgal, Alaigal Oivathillai among many others and has since then gone on to create a niche for himself as an actor with powerful performances in Aayutha Ezhuthu under Mani Ratnam’s direction, Vishal’s Pandianadu, the critically acclaimed Kurangu Bommai and in a special appearance role in Vijay’s Sethupathi’s Seethakaathi.

Although Bharathiraja is not making films anymore, he is currently attached to a few projects in starring roles that include the upcoming sports drama, Kennedy Club, which has Sasikumar followed by Taramani fame Vasanth’s Rocky, Sivakarthikeyan’s SK 16 and Maanaadu with STR.
