Bharath Gopi Endowment

Actor Mohanlal announced an endowment in memory of late Bharath Gopi in Kochi yesterday when he came there for the premiere show of his movie Akasha Gopuram. Bharath Gopi is a noted actor in Malayalam cinema. 

Akasha Gopuram was one of the last films of Bharath Gopi before his death in January at the age of 71. He was acting in the film De Ingottu Nokkiye when he was hospitalized. In Akasha Gopuram Gopi played the character of Abraham who is the mentor and former employer of Albert Samsun, played by Mohanlal. Mohanlal cited the movie as a tribute to the great actor and recalled his experiences with him. The endowment consists of of Rs. 51,000, which will be given to the best new actor in the Malayalam industry, every year.

Bharath Gopi started his career with Adoor Goplakrishnan’s Swayamvaram in 1972. He went on to act in several popular films like Ormakkayi, Yavanika, Panchavadippalam and Aadaminte Vaariyell. It was his portrayal of a villager in Kodiyettam which won him the National Award for Best actor in 1977. He was awarded the Padmasri in 1991.
