The news of popular Tamil actress VJ Chitra's death on December 9 came as a massive shock to those in the entertainment industry, including fans who are still reeling from the incident. Chithra died at the young age of 29 in a hotel room in Chennai’s Nazrathpet and the tragedy created a huge buzz on social media. Her husband Hemnath Ravi was arrested on December 15 after Chithu took her life, who on Monday was granted conditional bail. The Chennai-based businessman was taken into police custody on charges of abetment to suicide. According to the rules of the conditional bail, Hemnath is not allowed to leave Chennai.

Additional Public Prosecutor M Prabhavathi presented Chitra's nail clip analysis to the Court when Hemnath’s bail application had come up for hearing on Monday. The analysis pointed out that there was no incriminating evidence against Hemnath, who moved the court for bail on grounds that he had completed the statutory period of 60 days in judicial custody. Justice V Bharathidasan upon the motion granted Hemnath conditional bail.

The Chennai police investigating Chitra's suicide in January submitted that the actress was under a lot of pressure by Hemnath, who allegedly had doubts over her character. In his bail plea, Hemnath stated that he had not forced Chitra to quit acting nor had he suspected her character. However, Chitra's family members and friends, including fans have been questioning the sequence of events into the actress' death, while Hemnath has continued to maintain his stance. Chitra garnered a massive fan following after starring as the character Mullai on the hit Vijay TV serial Pandian Stores, which is also being streamed on Hotstar. Chitra had also acted in a Tamil film titled Calls directed by J Sabarish, which is expected to come out soon and will be a posthumous release.
