Sony launches blue-ray disc player

In the backdrop of rising prominence of blue-ray discs (BD) as the successor to standard DVDs, Sony India on Friday launched a blue-ray disc player for Rs. 9,990.

"Customers are looking to upgrade from DVD format to blue-ray Disc format. We have taken care to price the product properly so that large number of customers can enjoy the technology," said Head (Audio and Video Games), Sony India, Kenichi Kawamoto, during the launch.

Blue-ray market in India is expected to grow up to 500,000 units by 2012 and Sony India is aiming for 60% of the share and sell more than three lakh units, Kawamoto said. As a promo offer, customers can avail two Blue-ray discs: -- Hollywood movie Legion and Michael Jackson's This Is It -- with every blue-ray Disc player purchased.

The blue-ray disc player, which can be connected to the wireless broadband network at home and wirelessly stream content, has Internet video feature to stream movies, television episodes, video and music from internet applications like YouTube etc. It supports DVD format and has inbuilt USB slot to connect to digital camera, USB-enabled MP3 player and even USB storage devices.
