Great News: ICMR partners with BBIL for developing COVID-19 vaccine!
Researchers and scientists the world over are racing against time to develop a cure or a vaccine for the deadly COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus, which was declared a Pandemic in March of this year. This virus has already claimed lives numbering in lakhs and has left devastating numbers of people infected, across the globe! Though currently doctors are using different medicines to treat patients affected by the Corona Virus, there still hasn't been an effective cure which treats this Virus directly! Recently, there was a report that a private lab in a foreign country had identified a vaccine but it is still in the clinical trials stage. Similarly, there are reports of a few American and German companies too, having vaccines in the clinical trial stage.
However, we have some great news from India, now! The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has revealed that they are partnering with Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) to develop an indigenous vaccine for the COVID-19, in India itself! A Press Release to this effect was issued, yesterday! The statement also reveals that BBIL would be working on a virus strain isolated at ICMR's National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. The strain has already been transferred to BBIL and work on developing the vaccine has been initiated. ICMR-NIV would be providing continuous support to BBIL's endeavours, including seeking fast-track approvals for expediting the vaccine development and subsequent permission for animal studies and clinical evaluation.
