Tamil Nadu Health Minister Dr C. Vijayabaskar addressed the media on Saturday and provided updates on the state's response to the coronavirus pandemic. The official number for COVID-19 cases in TN on May 16 are 477 new cases taking the state's total to 10,585 cases. Among the number of cases in the state, Chennai district has been the most affected with 332 new cases on Friday taking the city's total to date to 6,271 cases.

Three people had succumbed to the deadly effects of the novel coronavirus on Friday taking Tamil Nadu's death toll to 74. However, the day was a monumental one considering 939 people had recovered and were discharged making it a new record for the most number of recoveries in a single day. The state's total recovery count now stands at 3,538 with the number of COVID-19 suspected individuals in isolation coming up to 4,415. The number of samples tested on May 16 is 10,535 taking the total samples tested so far to 3,13,639 while the number of persons tested today are 8,270 and the total number of people tested standing at present at 2,99,176.
