No releases this Onam?

Traditionally, Onam is considered as one of the best seasons to release a Malayalam film. During this season, we can expect the arrival of some of the best films made that year. For all top stars, an Onam release is not only prestigious but also a must for their survival in commercial cinema. But this time, it seems that there will no film during Onam, 2008!

For the first time in the history of Malayalam cinema, this Onam (From September 10 to 14) happens to fall on same period of the month long Noyambu (Ramzan fasting) that starts on September 2 and will go on till Perunaal day (Ramzan) either on October 1 or 2. People mostly in Malabar keep away from cinema as a part of their fasting in this season, resulting in a parallel drop in the collections from theatres.

Thus the film makers are now planning to shift the releases from Onam to October 1 (Ramzan) and Oct 2 (Gandhi Jayanthi) which offers a bumper weekend followed by Pooja holidays (October 7 to 12).

Mohanlal's off-beat art film Aakasha Gopuram, which was slated for Onam release, will grace the theatres on August 29, prior to Onam. Prithviraj's Thirakatha has been shifted to October 9. Mammootty's Maya Bazaar and Mohanlal's Kurukshetra will hit the theatres on October 1 and 2 respectively. Jayaram's long delayed Paarthen Kanda Paralokam is now scheduled to come on September 5.
