Iconic television actor Mangal Dhillon, best known for his roles on  hit Hindi shows Junoon and Buniyaad, died battling cancer on Sunday, June 11. The actor had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ludhiana, Punjab, for some time, but his health had begun to deteriorate a few days ago. The tragic news of Mangal Dhillon's passing was shared by Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Twitter, who wrote, "Saddened to learn about the demise of noted actor, writer, director and producer of Punjabi cine industry Mr Mangal Dhillon. It’s a big loss to the world of Indian Cinema. His captivating voice and theatrical displays will be missed by many. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and fans. (sic)"

Mangal Dhillon is remembered for his roles on mainstream television shows before cable TV gained popularity in India and played the role of Lubhaya Ram in the 1986 series Buniyaad. He also appeared as an advocate in the 1988 film Khoon Bhari Maang, which starred legendary actress Rekha in the lead role. Mangal subsequently went on to make appearances in several notable films like Dil Tera Aashiq, Pyar Ka Devta, Ranbhoomi, Swarg Yahan Narak Yahan, Train to Pakistan, and Vishwatma. After a stint in films, he made a return to television in 1993 in the show, Junoon, which went on to become a huge success and saw him play the role of Sumer Rajvansh. The Faridkot-based actor later played the role of Akbar in the period TV series Noorjahan in 2000. 

Apart from his passion for acting, Mangal Dhillon also formed a production company and released a historical film titled Khalsa, which went on to be well-received. The Government of Punjab too honored him with the Baba Farid Award for the film and received an outstanding achievement award from the Chief Minister of Punjab in 2006, while also getting felicitated with various other honors from organizations in the state and abroad.
