Basheer's centenary celebrations

Mathrubhumi, a leading Malayalam daily, will organize the centenary of the legendary Malayalam novelist and short story writer late Vaikom Mohammad Basheer from November 15 in Kozhikode to pay tribute to this most celebrated playwright, whose novel 'Mathilukal' was made into a film with the same title by Adoor Gopalakrishnan with Mammootty in 1989.

The three-day celebrations titled 'Mathrubhumi and Basheer' will be inaugurated by noted social analyst Sukumar Azhikode. Basheer's wife Fabi, his daughter Shahina, sculptor M.V. Devan and photographer Punalur Rajan will be honoured on the occasion. Two books, namely 'Basheer Ormaikkappuram' and 'Mathrubhumiym Basheerum', will also be released at the function.

The celebrations include a photo exhibition on Basheer and a play by Chennai-based 'Perche'. Basheer's famous writings like 'Bhargavi Nilayam', 'Poovampazham', 'Shapthangal' and 'Oru Manushan' will also be enacted together as a play, Mathrubhumi Chairman and Managing Director, M.P. Veerendrakumar told a press meet on Wednesday.
