Suresh Gopi receives Bharath Gopi award

Malayalam action hero Suresh Gopi�received the first�Bharath Gopi award on Thursday from Kavalam Narayana Panicker�at a function�in Thiruvananthapuramon the first death anniversary of the actor.

The award is instituted jointly by Bharathiya Kalapeedom, Sopanam and Vivekananda Cultural Institute. Actor Nedumudi Venu, Jagannathan, Padmakumar, Producer Suresh Kumar, P. Narayana Kurup and M.S. Kumar attended the function.

Bharath Gopi, one of the greatest actors in India,�began his career as a theatre actor and debuted in films with Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Swayamvaram in 1972. His second film was Kodiyettam (again by Adoor Gopalakrishnan), for which he won the National Award for Best Actor in 1977. His noted films are Yavanika, Ente Mamattikutty Ammmakku, Revathykkoru Paavakutty, Ormakkayi, Panchavadipaalam, Chidambaram, Rekhayude Maranam - Oru Flash Back, Thampu, Kaathe Kilikoodu,Sandhya Mayangum Neram, April 18, Samaantharanal and Oru Painkilkaatha.

Besides Malayalam movies, Bharath Gopi ventured into Hindi with two films; Aghat and Satah Se Udta Aadmi. Gopi was paralyzed following a stroke in 1986 at the peak of his career. Then, he took another decade to return to films with Padheyam in 1992. Bharath Gopi has also directed some films including Yamanan, Utsavapittennu, Njattady and Ente Hridaythinte Udama.

Yamanam won the National award for�Best Film on Social Issues in 1991. He was awarded the Padma Shri in the same year. The recipient of several regional, national and international awards, Bharath Gopi has written "Abhinayam Anubhvam", for which he got the National Award for the best book on cinema. His last movie was Mohanlal starrer Aakashagopuram (2008) directed by K.P. Kumaran.
