No movies in multiplexes?

“Oh, no!” you say? Yes, it is true. If reports are to be trusted, the Producers' Guild of India has decided not to release any more movies in multiplexes till they settle certain profit-related issues with the owners of multiplexes.

This spat between producers and multiplex owners started when the former group accused the latter of demanding an “imbalanced and unfair share” in the profits of the movies running in their multiplexes. Following this, the Producers' Guild have decided to boycott multiplexes and instead, screen movies in ordinary theatres until both arrive at a mutual agreement. “Delhi-6 will be the last movie to be released in multiplexes,” said an agitated Vashu Bhagnani, Chairman of Pooja Films.

“The movies will release in multiplexes only after settlement with multiplex owners. Every time they demand an increased percentage of profit in films despite the increase in production cost and the global recession effect on entertainment industry. This year, the entertainment industry is expected to grow at just 7% whereas last year, it was 12.3% and they keep demanding more and more every time. This is incorrect! Hence, we will settlethe profit-sharing issue first and then will release any film in the multiplexes,” added Bhagnani.

Hope both arrive at a mutual agreement and settle the issue soon. For, who canstay away froma multiplex movie-watching experience for long?
