IFFI 2009 at Goa: Shah Rukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu
Shah Rukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu, an entry in the Indian Premiere Section of the IFFI, is a lively fresh film despite the storyline based in a Mumbai slum. The movie narrates the oft-heard tale of a teenager mesmerised by a movie super star. You have seen it before in Guddi, Main Madhuri Dixit Banana Chahati Hoon, but Shah Rukh... is daringly different.
What goes in the movie's favour? The simplicity with which it is presented. Director Makarand Deshpande does not leave anything to be imagined, spelling out his intentions right from the first frame. What does popular actor-director Makrand Deshpande have to say about this film?

"I was inspired by Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahit Hoon to give this title for my movie. As an actor, it is easier for me to direct another actor. I know what are the weaknesses of an actor, the problems they face and what questions come into their minds," says a smiling Makarand. Shah Rukh Bola... is slated to for release in March 2010.
The story begins with Laali (debutante Ritika), a roadside flower vendor, being stabbed by John, who is madly in love with her and just cannot accept that he has to compete with none other than King Khan, who has a huge fan in Laali.
While selling flowers at the traffic signal, Laali meets Shahrukh, who lowers his car window and says the magical word, "You are looking cute." Even before the words could sink in, the Super Star has zoomed off. Life is� just not the same for Laali after that.
The movie traces the journey of Laali, wherein she not only recovers from the wounds of stabbing but gains confidence. She reforms John and even saves him from being killed by the local goon, played to meticulous perfection by the director himself.
The film has a happy ending with SRK coming to meet his biggest fan. The movie's resemblance to the 1956 Hollywood movie The Rainmaker is palpable. There, the depressed girl was played by the screen icon Katharine Hepburn.
The Hindi version is sleek and technically brilliant backed by the astute camerawork of debutant Pathan Parvez Khan.
