The Sri Lankan Parliamentary elections for 2020 were originally scheduled to happen in April but were postponed twice due to the COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus Pandemic! In such a situation, the elections were held recently and the counting happened yesterday! The election results are now out and Mahinda Rajapakse's Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party (SLPP) or People's Front, won a landslide victory by a huge margin! They captured 145 seats of the total 225-member legislature and are also said to have the support of atleast five other allies! The SLPP's primary opponents could only manage to secure 54 seats and have come in a distant second. The recently concluded elections in Sri Lanka saw a polling of 75% from the 16.2 million eligible voters in the island country!

Mahinda Rajapakse's younger brother Gotabaya Rajapakse is the current President of the country and he is expected to swear in the former as the Prime Minister, on August 20th! Gotabaya Rajapakse won the Presidential elections in 2019 and assumed the position in November last year, after the disastrous Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka, which left 269 people dead and hundreds more injured. His handling of the Corona Virus crisis is said to have given the people of Sri Lanka total confidence in the SLPP and now the two Rajapakse brothers will have total control of the legislature. There are fears from the opposition parties that the Rajapakse brothers might push for changes to the constitution to strengthen their dynastic rule. However, there are some who feel that any such changes might induce sibling rivalry between Gotabaya and Mahinda!

Many opposition parties had accused the Rajapakse administration of corruption, intimidation and censorship but on ground reports state that the people of Sri Lanka have confidence in the SLPP, especially after the earlier government showed total inability in handling the Easter Sunday attacks. Mahinda Rajapakse has been promoting his son Namal as his political heir and now with Mahinda, Namal and three other members of their family winning the current elections, they are expected to control the key departments in the new administration. Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe lost in the elections and his party, which earlier had 106 parliamentary seats, has managed to win just 1 seat! A number of critics and poll analysts fear that with both the Rajapakse brothers in positions of ultimate power, there could be a repeat of situations like in 2009, when they crushed the Tamil separatist rebels, ending the decades old conflict in Sri Lanka. They also fear that the Rajapakse brothers would end Presidential term limits and bring the Police & Judiciary under their direct control and further dynastic power, over generations!
