Amidst a lot of confusions and controversies, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for aspiring medical students, is happening across the country today! Over 15 lakh students are expected to be taking this test, despite unbridled infections of the COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus! Students had for long been asking for the NEET to either be postponed or cancelled but this didn't happen and over-ruling all objections, the exam is still happening. However, Tamil Nadu has been one state where there has been staunch opposition for the NEET from both students and politicians alike and the effect on the students has been drastic. In the past 1 week alone, four students who were to appear for the NEET have taken their own life by suicide, in Tamil Nadu!
Of these 4 deaths, three happened in a single day, yesterday! Fearing failure in the highly competitive NEET, these students from Madurai, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Tiruchengode, went to the extreme of taking their own life by suicide! Jothi Durga (19) from Madurai left a letter and a voice note for her family members, before committing suicide. In the note, she had mentioned that despite preparing well for NEET, she feared not getting a medical seat as this was her second attempt. She was the daughter of a Sub-Inspector of Police. Adithya (20) from Dharmapuri took his own life when his parents were away from their house, yesterday evening. This year was to be his third attempt at NEET.
Motilal (21), whose father runs an electrical shop, committed suicide in Tiruchengode. This was to be his third attempt at NEET to obtain a medical seat. Jothi, Motilal and Adithya, all took their lives within hours of each other, yesterday. Vignesh, a farmer's son from Ariyalur couldn't afford to attend a private college last year and fearing failure again this year, he too took his life, earlier this week. These tragic suicides have caused the anti-NEET voices to intensify in Tamil Nadu! Many opposition parties in the state have been urging the State Government to move for the cancellation of NEET. The state had earlier requested the Centre to exempt TN from NEET but that did not happen. Now, people are calling for the abolishment of the entire NEET exam! Let's hope no more students take their lives over pressure from exams! There are also some reports that the question paper for NEET was leaked by a few miscreants in Bihar, earlier today!
