Meera Jasmine bags Srividya award

Meera Jasmine bagged the first Srividya award for the best actress in Malayalam films on Thursday. She has been chosen for her role in the Mammootty starrer Ore Kadal, directed by Shyamaprasad. The film examines the extra-martial relationship between an intellectual economist and a housewife.

The award will be given on late actress Srividya’s second death anniversary this Sunday (October 19). K.B. Ganesh Kumar, chairman of the MLV Srividya Charitable Society, said in Thiruvananthapuram that a jury comprising veteran Malayalam film director Siddique chose Meera Jasmine for the award.

Srividya, one of the finest actresses in South, acted in over 150 films in Tamil and Malayalam during 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Srividya debuted in Malayalam films with a dance scene in Kumarasambhavam, directed by P. Subramanian. She played a heroine for the first time in 1969 for Chattambi Kavala opposite Sathyan in 1969.

However, Srividya gained public attention through Chenda, directed by Vincent. In the mid-1970s she became busy in the Tamil film industry, starring in many hit films like Sollathan Ninakkiren and Apoorva Raagangal, both directed by K. Balachander. She died on October 19, 2006, aged 53.
