Kalakalappu 2, the comedy-drama film written and directed by Sundar C and produced by Khushbu Sundar is the sequel to the 2012 film Kalakalappu and stars Jiiva, Jai, Shiva, Nikki Galrani and Catherine Tresa in lead roles with music by Hiphop Tamizha.

Any filmmaker who takes upon him/her the challenge of making a sequel to a super-successful film is entrusted with a monumental task to not only repeat the same level of triumph, if not top it altogether, but never to fail in the quest. And, director Sundar. C has managed to come on top once again this time in Kalakalappu 2, the sequel to his 2012 smash laugh riot hit.

To bring into perspective, the plot of Kalakalappu 2 revolves predominantly around hereditary property and money along with the involvement of the film’s prime characters (Jai, Jiiva, Shiva, Nikki Galrani and Catherine Tresa) and the unexpected ordeals they endure.

We are introduced to Jai, who learns about a hereditary property in Kasi and is determined to retrieve it. He comes across Jiiva, who owns a mansion in ruins and is yearning for money to get his sister married off to Sathish, whose sister is none other than Catherine Tresa, whom Jiiva is head over heels in love with. Nikki Galrani appears as an innocent girl, who eventually takes a liking to Jai. Mirchi Shiva is the only character in the film who reprises his role as the crook from the original.

The plot takes a turn with the introduction of new characters like an ex-minister in the form of Madhusoodhanan, Munishkanth as his auditor gone rogue, Yogi Babu as a spiritual man, VTV Ganesh as Nikki Galrani’s father, Robo Shankar as a comedic antagonist, and Radha Ravi as a policeman who’s now turned into a bounty hunter.

Throw all these characters into the same picture with a common objective and that is how you can sum up Kalakalappu 2. The film is packed with laugh out loud moments from start to end - especially in the second half when the story kicks into an overdrive. Director Sundar. C has left an indelible stamp on his talent yet again reminding us his grip over the genre.

As for the performances, Kalakalappu 2 has given all its characters equal importance and substantial scope to perform. Jiiva is one of the few stars, who manages to pull off the balance of carrying roles that include humor with total ease. Although Jai’s character starts off a bit serious, he too melds in well with the plot and reminds us his comedic timing is something we will always adore. Mirchi Shiva is an absolute treat for us throughout the course of the film and evokes laughter in us each time he comes up on the screen. The two lovely ladies - Catherine Tresa and Nikki Galrani - appear as a refreshing breeze in a film that has a plethora of characters and they remains in us even after we have walked out of the cinemas.

Now, for the ensemble supporting cast, it is no easy task to give each of them a motive and subsequently churn out a story that ties them all together, but Sundar. C does exactly that with Sathish, Yogi Babu, Robo Shankar, Ramdoss, Vaiyapuri, Manobala, Singampuli, VTV Ganesh, Santhana Bharathi, Kaajal Pasupathi, Madhusudhan Rao, and Radharavi, who all have prominent roles to play in the overall outcome of the storyline.

On the technical front, U. K. Senthilkumar has shot the film in a colorful manner keeping in mind the film needs to be a laughathon and has maintained it to be bright throughout. As for the editing, N. B. Srikanth’s cuts do not feel inappropriate at any point showcasing us his talents once again. There’s no stopping Hiphop Tamizha, who along with enjoyable songs is making a name for himself in the background score department.
