National Award-winning Tamil actor 'Chiyaan' Vikram's Thangalaan will not be coming out in theatres worldwide on January 26, 2024, as initially announced, popular film producer-distributor G. Dhananjeyan has revealed. The period action drama film directed by acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Pa. Ranjith and featuring National Award-winning composer G. V. Prakash Kumar's music will instead be getting a world premiere at a prestigious film festival, with the new release date expected to be announced soon. In an exclusive interview with Galatta, Dhananjeyan opened up on Thangalaan's new release plans saying, "The exact details will be announced by producer Gnanavel Raja sir. We have been receiving numerous invitations from big film festival organizers who have been requesting a premiere. Now, Gnanavel sir is in a big dilemma since there's so much expectation and demand for the film. The organizers of these film festivals are telling us to premiere it and then go for a theatrical release. It won't be a premiere once the film opens in cinemas as it becomes a post-theatrical release. It has now become a challenge."
Speaking about the big advantage of Vikram's Thangalaan getting a film festival premiere, G. Dhananjeyan said, "You get recognition at an international level. For example, Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai was announced recently to premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands and that is a huge recognition. Your film getting a world premiere there is a massive recognition. People from around the world will watch it at that film festival." He added, "Similarly, Thangalaan has also been receiving invitations from prestigious film festivals and the team is currently doing an evaluation. Gnanavel Raja sir and Ranjith sir said, 'We'll reveal the release date once we know the announcements from the festivals.' When this is a world-class film, we need not target only the box office. We do want big box office results, but we also require world recognition. So, sir has said that we'll wait for some time and then announce the exact release date either towards the end of this month or at the beginning of January 2024."
