Blockbuster director A. L. Vijay has carved a niche for himself in the film industry with his work for over a decade after a strong debut with the 'Thala' Ajith starrer, Kireedam, in 2007. He tasted massive success in his next film, romantic period drama Madrasapattinam, in 2010, which starred Arya and also introduced British actress Amy Jackson to Tamil audiences. Vijay then joined hands with 'Chiyaan' Vikram twice in Deiva Thirumagal and Thaandavam after which he teamed up with 'Thalapathy' Vijay in 2013 for the mass action film, Thalaivaa. His last two films, Prabhu Deva's Devi 2 and the Avanum Naanum segment in the romantic anthology, Kutty Story, garnered him positive responses from audiences and critics, and is at present waiting for the release of Thalaivi, a biopic based on the life of the Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa.

As Thalaivi's release has been put on hold in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, A. L. Vijay, who got married to Aishwarya in 2019, was blessed with a baby boy in May last year in Chennai. The couple had named their son Dhruvaa, with the toddler celebrating his first birthday this past Sunday. Photos of Dhruvaa's first birthday celebrations with A. L. Vijay and Aishwarya have flooded social media, with fans pouring in their wishes for the baby. Not many pictures of the couple's child were out until now, with many gushing over the cute little boy celebrating his first birthday.

A. L. Vijay will be looking for his Thalaivi to become yet another big success as the film is a pan-Indian venture releasing in several languages, with National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut portraying the late stateswoman J. Jayalalithaa. Kangana is joined by Tamil actor Arvind Swami, who has been cast as 'Puratchi Thalaivar' M. G. Ramachandran (MGR), with the film also featuring a highly-talented supporting cast that includes names like Nassar, Bhagyashree, Samuthirakani, Madhu Bala, Thambi Ramaiah, Poorna among others. Composer G. V. Prakash Kumar has composed the music for Thalaivi, with Baahubali screenwriter K. V. Vijayendra Prasad penning the screenplay.
