The Chennai Customs officials seized around 2.8 kgs of gold from the Meenambakkam international airport. According to official estimates, the consignment is worth nearly 1 crore.
According to the Customs officials, the consignment was found split between five passengers. They were stopped by the officials after gold bits were discovered in one of their pockets. While the bits were rather minimal, all five admitted to having gold paste in their rectums. Gold paste is fast becoming the most flagged mode of gold smuggling as it cannot be detected by traditional methods that are based on metal detection.
The involvement of some prominent jewellers and gold dealers across big cities cannot be ruled out, according to officials. The seizure was registered under the Customs Act and an investigation was launched into the matter.
