Paramount Pictures has officially set the release date for the upcoming third installment of the blockbuster Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It will feature the return of Ben Schwartz as the titular speedster. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to be theatrically released in theatres right in time for the holiday season on 20 December 2024. The upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog sequel sees the return of our favorite Sega character, with both Tails and Knuckles the Echidna teased alongside him.

The official Twitter handle of Sonic the Hedgehog made this newfound news public in order to create a hype for their fans. Sharing a GIF in which Sonic, Tails and Knuckles are seen, they wrote, "Running faster, flying higher, and punching harder. #SonicMovie3 hits theatres on December 20, 2024 ". Check it out:

This third part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series will be going directly up against James Cameron’s long-in-development Avatar 3 which has also been planned to hit the screen on December 20. It will also be debuting in the same month as another high-profile project Wicked which has been made in the form of the film adapted from the Broadway musical.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog film was met with critical and box office success, while Sonic the Hedgehog 2 became the highest-grossing video game movie of all time in the US by making a whopping $400 million at the box office. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starred Parks and Recreation vet Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Jim Carrey, and Shemar Moore, with Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckles. The sequel was directed by Jeff Fowler, who made his feature directorial debut on the hit predecessor.
