Pakistani comedian and television actor Umer Sharif passed away in Germany on Saturday. He was 66. The popular actor had been suffering from several ailments and was admitted to a hospital in Germany. He was taken to the U.S. for further treatment after his health condition began to deteriorate. The news of Sharif's death was shared by Pakistan’s ambassador to Germany, Dr Mohammad Faisal. He tweeted, "With deep sorrow it is announced that Mr. Umer Sharif has passed away. In #Germany. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Our CG is present at the hospital to assist the family in every way." 

Dr Mohammad Faisal also shared a picture from Umer Sharif’s funeral proceedings, which saw many gather to pay their final respects to the iconic comedy actor. He wrote, "Funeral prayer for Mr. Umer Sharif offered in Nürnberg today. Large number of community offered dua. Arrangements being made for transportation of mortal remains to Pakistan by tomorrow.⁦" Earlier, Sharif’s wife Zareen had informed that the actor was wheelchair-bound and had to be taken to the U.S. for treatment. Born in 1955 in Karachi, the late comedian started his stand-up career at the age of 14 and garnered a following for his acts in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, while also making a transition to films as a director, producer, actor and television personality. Sharif received the National Award for Best Director and Best Actor in 1992 for his film, Mr 420. He also turned host for the popular Geo TV show, The Shareef Show

Veteran actor Anupam Kher expressed his condolences in a video over the news of Umer Sharif's passing away. He wrote, "Good bye janab #UmerSharif Saab. Deeply saddened to know about the demise of the legendary comedian, actor and humanitarian #UmerSharif Saab. He was a legend in the true sense! Met him in London many years back. His effortless humour was infectious. Learnt a lot from him. May almighty give his family and fans the courage to deal with the loss." Actor Jaaved Jaaferi too shared his sorrow and tweeted, "My heart is so so heavy with the news that the highly respected and legendary comedian #UmerSharif bhai passed away today. He not only had a unique ‘andaz e bayaan’ but was also a socially and  morally conscious human being. May Allaah(swt) have mercy on and bless his soul 🤲🏽" Popular television presenter and comedian Kapil Sharma paid his tribute to Sharif and wrote, "Alvida legend 🙏may your soul Rest In Peace 🙏🙏🙏 #UmerShareef."
