Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passed way earlier this afternoon at 1.04 PM in Chennai. The 6-time National Award winning singer was 74 years old. SPB was initially admitted to hospital on August 5 after having mild symptoms of Corona. Despite recovering from the infection, his lungs were affected and he was there in the hospital for the past 50 days. He left for his heavenly abode this afternoon and let us pray for his soul to rest in peace. An official statement from MGM Healthcare hospital has been released and it states, “Thiru S P Balasubrahmanyam had been admitted at MGM Healthcare on August 5th and commenced on life support measures since August 14th for severe COVID-19 pneumonia. He continued to be closely monitored by our multidisciplinary team in the critical care unit. He tested negative for COVID-19 on September 4th.

In a further setback this morning, despite maximal life support measures and the best efforts of the clinical team, his condition deteriorated further and he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest. With profound grief, we regret to inform that he has passed away on September 25th at 13:04 Hours. We express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, well-wishers and admirers at their loss during this time of anguish and sorrow.”. According to reports, SPB’s mortal remains are expected to leave from the hospital premises at 4 PM and it is believed to be taken to his house at Nungambakkam. More details regarding the final rites is expected to be known in the next few hours.

SPB is survived by his wife Savithri, son SPB Charan and daughter SPB Pallavi. The legendary singer has won six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer. SPB is also a recipient of the Civilian honours, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. After making his singing debut with the Telugu film, Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna in 1966, SPB has recorded more than 40000 songs in various languages. Notably, SPB holds the record for singing most number of songs by a male singer. He was a versatile singer who was the best in any given genre.
